Big Local’s cash making a difference

Big Local is an exciting community-led opportunity which provides residents in 150 areas across England with at least £1million to spend over the course of 10 years, to use in a way that makes a positive and lasting difference to their community.

Funded by the Big Lottery and managed by Local Trust, Big Local targets areas across the UK which have been overlooked in terms of funding or resources in the past.

In 2013, North Cleethorpes was selected as one of Big Local’s target areas.

Since then, and with the support of local people, businesses and organisations, Big Local funding has, and continues to be, invested into a number of different areas.

Every Wednesday the Big Local team meet at Poplar Road Fire Station from 9:30am – 12:30pm to discuss how Big Local funding could be spent.

Residents and businesses living or based in North Cleethorpes are welcome to attend and are encouraged to share their views.

In September 2015 Big Local provided £51,925 of funding to refurbish The Pavilion on Sussex Recreation Ground on Brereton Avenue in North Cleethorpes.

A further £15,000 of funding was invested to upgrade the lighting on Sussex Rec in order to enable people using The Pavilion or frequenting the park, to be able to do so safely and for longer.

The Pavilion is now being used by YMCA Humber as the base for their Youth Club which takes place every Monday between 4pm and 8pm, and caters to children and young people aged between 8 and 19.

Whilst there, members have the option to participate in a number of indoor and outdoor activities such as arts and crafts, pool, skateboarding and football.

Volunteering each week at the Youth Club is Big Local Youth Development Worker Jasmin Flint.

Jasmin, who joined the team back in April, will be going out into the community and speaking to young people aged 14 and 24, and encouraging them to have their say about how they would like Big Local funding to be spent. If you are a young person and would like to speak to Jasmin email

Most recently, Big Local invested £3500 to extend the performance area of the Birdhouse Family Festival to Cleethorpes North Promenade for a day.

The six-day half-term extravaganza which was supported by Arts Council England, included performances from Two Old Men, Earthbound Misfits and The Big Dippers, and was originally due to omit Cleethorpes North Promenade altogether.

Thanks to funding from Big Local however, the festival kicked off on the 28th May on the North Promenade, much to the delight of businesses and visitors alike.

Big Local Youth Development Worker Jasmin Flint who attended the event said: “The festival was a great success, the sun was shining and people seemed to really enjoy themselves, I know I did. The performers were brilliant and the fact that the whole thing was free made it even better. The festival hasn’t been to Cleethorpes before so it was something a bit different, and I hope it returns next year”
