Back in April of this year, the Big Local North Cleethorpes committee welcomed onboard former Springboard Youth Ambassador, Jasmin Flint, as their new Youth Development Worker.
The aim of Big Local funding is to make North Cleethorpes, and 150 other deprived areas across the UK, a better place to live and work. In order to achieve this, the committee felt that it was important to give young people living in North Cleethorpes a platform to share their ideas. The committee felt that the best way to gather the views of young people would be to employ a young person with a background in youth work who could go out into the community and speak to the young people directly. The committee was lucky enough to find Jasmin, who, prior to joining Big Local, was employed by Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire (VANEL), and was seconded to NELC’s Community Learning Services programme, Springboard. There she worked as a Youth Ambassador supporting young people between the ages of 18 and 24 who were not in employment, education, or training (NEET). Jasmin’s contract with VANEL came to an end in March of this year as funding for the Springboard programme finished. Jasmin is now employed by Capacity Buildings Ltd and is commissioned by North Cleethorpes Big Local as their Youth Development Worker.
As Big Local’s Youth Development Worker, Jasmin will be going out into the community and speaking to young people aged 14 to 24 who live in North Cleethorpes and asking them about how they would like to see Big Local funding spent. This could be by opening new youth clubs, rejuvenating local parks, funding sports clubs or providing support to young people with regards to employment and training opportunities. Plans are also underway for Jasmin to set up a youth-lead focus group where young people can come together and discuss their funding ideas at regular intervals. The information she gathers from her outreach work and the focus group meetings will be presented to and discussed by, the Big Local Committee. The committee meets at Poplar Road Fire Station every Wednesday from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm to discuss the fund. The meetings are open to any individual or group living or based in North Cleethorpes, including businesses and organisations.
From the 30th June between 4 pm and 8 pm Jasmin will be working at YMCA Humber’s new Youth Club at 22 Grant Street in Cleethorpes. Young people who wish to find out more about Big Local are welcome to attend. If you are unable to attend the youth club but would like to contact Jasmin you can email her via Jasmin@BigLocalNorthCleethorpes, or send her a Tweet, @JasminFlint. Ultimately, Jasmin hopes to reach out to as many young people as possible and encourage them to help shape the future of North Cleethorpes for the benefit of this, and future generations.
