Introduction

Voluntary Action North East Lincolnshire has held many a beach sports day in the past, usually headed up by Jenny Hodson (Youth Development Manager). However, in 2018, the mantle was passed across to Nicole Kowal and Jean-Louis Plaatjies.

Saturday August 11th 2018 saw coaches from Grimsby Badminton Club, Grimsby Hockey Club and Grimsby Snaprats Basketball club take to the beach under the guidance of Nicole and Jean-Louis to host a free sports day. Bright sunshine, sand and laughter was the order of the day as locals and holiday makers alike joined in a fun filled day of activities. In total, 80 attendees partook in a day that certainly left your shoes and socks filled with sand.

Jenny Hodson, a World and European Veterans Hockey Champion said she was delighted to be playing her sport on the beach!

“It is a really good thing to do, you can see we have so many activities for everyone and children and adults are enjoying it.”

Victoria Russell, assistant coach at Grimsby’s Snaprats Community Basketball Clubs, added: “What a brilliant way to spend a lovely day in Cleethorpes and hopefully it will encourage more young people to enjoy sport.”

Other activities on the day included volleyball, Frisbee, hoopla, space hoppers and much much more!

Follow up to the event

All clubs thoroughly enjoyed the day and attendance was good enough for them to offer to come back to future events. Badminton even reported an increase in numbers. One of the attendees to this event, joined the IGNITE team and set up the 2019 sports day.
