ABOUT THE PROJECTS

The largest and highest profile Big Local activity to date was the early refurbishment of the Pavilion in Sidney Sussex Recreation Ground. This was a £52k investment from Big Local North Cleethorpes and a huge investment in community time. The result has been to bring the Pavilion back into active use for the benefit of the whole community.

Smaller investments included some small scale target hardening work, purchase of mobile CCTV and improvements to the lighting on the recreation ground. This community safety related work more recently led into a connection with the DN35 Facebook group and increased support for community empowerment around a safer community.

An music event – “Music on the Prom” was also a useful experiment in community engagement and in 2016 the SidFest community event was a great opportunity to engage further with local residents to start consulting about improvements and development of Sidney Park. Further summer community events are being planned for 2017 and a local social enterprise – “Moon on the Water” is being supported as a new community arts and culture venue as a focus for a range of upcoming activities.

Big Local is also investing in local primary schools for educational projects that fall outside the national curriculum and that benefit local children. These school projects have been complementing investment from Big Local with their own additional grant applications.

In 2016 the Big Local partnership was lending support to a campaign for a right of way in the area and has been working closely with various agencies to continue towards a major cleanup of the north beach. This is still an ongoing planning challenge but funds are committed to making the north beach a much better environment.

Another partnership investment has been in the Cleethorpes Cycle Hub and to extensions of local cycle tracks the work for which is ongoing.

A much longer term and difficult exercise has been to progress work around improving the local housing stock and dealing with fuel poverty. This continues to be a thematic aim for Big Local North Cleethorpes but will take longer to make headway.

Smaller initiatives with local groups, organisations, partners and individuals within the North Cleethorpes footprint continue to be planned and assessed for suitability and the range of projects supporting the local community will continue to grow throughout 2017.
